Our client is looking for an experienced SDET / Test Automation Engineer to join their technical environment in Stellenbosch. The role offers the opportunity to work across the full mobile quality engineering lifecycle, from framework design and automation development through to API testing, CI/CD integration, troubleshooting and release confidence.
You will play a key role in strengthening engineering quality by creating reusable automation solutions, improving application testability and identifying defects earlier in the software development lifecycle. The successful candidate will work directly with developers and other engineering stakeholders in an Agile environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain reusable, scalable test automation frameworks and components for mobile applications.
• Develop automated functional, regression, integration and end-to-end test suites across iOS and Android.
• Execute testing across physical devices, emulators and simulators, covering different OS versions, screen sizes and device configurations.
• Validate mobile functionality including navigation, gestures, permissions, push notifications, biometrics, deep links, offline behaviour and application lifecycle scenarios.
• Validate integrations between mobile applications, APIs and backend services, including automated API testing.
• Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD build, deployment and release pipelines.
• Investigate failed automated tests, analyse logs and test results, and support root-cause analysis and defect resolution.
• Work closely with developers to improve application testability and strengthen engineering quality.
• Manage test data, test environments and device configurations required for automated and exploratory testing.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the development lifecycle.

Job Experience & Skills Required / Ideal Candidate Profile
Education:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a related field would be advantageous; the source job description does not specify a mandatory qualification.

Experience:

• Strong SDET or test automation engineering experience, including the design and development of reusable automation frameworks.
• Hands-on mobile application testing experience across both iOS and Android.
• Hands-on mobile test automation experience, including developing, maintaining and troubleshooting automated test suites.
• Experience with API testing and automation, including REST APIs and JSON.
• Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and working with Git or equivalent source control.
• Experience with automated regression, functional, integration and end-to-end testing.
• Experience testing on physical devices, emulators and simulators.
• Experience with mobile debugging, log analysis and technical investigation of test failures.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum software delivery environments.

Technical Skills:

• Strong programming proficiency in one or more of JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, Java, Kotlin, Swift or Python.
• Knowledge of Android and iOS platform differences, OS-version compatibility and device fragmentation.
• Understanding of mobile application lifecycle, foreground/background behaviour, device permissions, push notifications, deep links and biometric authentication.
• Knowledge of offline functionality, network interruption/recovery and cross-device compatibility.
• Understanding of mobile performance and reliability considerations, including responsiveness, memory usage and battery impact.

Advantageous Experience:

• Appium, Espresso, XCUITest, Maestro, WebdriverIO or Detox.
• Playwright, Selenium or TestCafe.
• React Native, Xcode or Android Studio.
• BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, LambdaTest, AWS Device Farm or Firebase Test Lab.
• Postman, Swagger or REST Assured.
• Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, Jenkins or GitLab CI.
• Docker, BDD/Cucumber, visual regression, performance, accessibility or security testing.
