Role Overview

We are building an AI-powered underwriting solution and are looking for a seasoned P&C underwriting practitioner to serve as our Subject Matter Expert. This is not a traditional underwriting role - you will directly shape product direction, validate AI use cases, and help us build something that solves real operational pain points for underwriters.

If you're someone who's frustrated by legacy systems, loves the idea of building rather than maintaining, and wants your expertise to have a lasting impact - this is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pain point validation and workflow documentation across P&C underwriting functions

  • Prioritize and validate AI use cases based on real-world underwriting decision logic

  • Review and stress-test product features from an underwriter's perspective

  • Support pre-sales conversations - helping us speak credibly to prospective clients

  • Contribute to whitepapers, product narratives, and go-to-market positioning

  • Act as an internal advisor during product development sprints and roadmap reviews

Qualifications

  • 8-12 years of hands-on P&C underwriting experience

  • Multi-line exposure across at least two of: Commercial Property, Personal Lines, Specialty (E&O, D&O, Cyber), or Auto

  • Experience across at least two channels: Carriers (admitted/non-admitted), MGAs, or Wholesale/Retail Brokers

  • Prior involvement in underwriting transformation, system implementation, or digitization initiatives

Mindset & Approach

  • Entrepreneurial - excited to build, not just advise

  • Comfortable operating without direct reports or a corporate structure

  • Strong communicator who can translate underwriting nuance for product, tech, and executive audiences

  • Able to think horizontally across lines of business, not just within a specialty

Strong Preferences

  • Experience with vendor selection or RFP processes

  • Exposure to insurtech platforms or AI-assisted underwriting tools

  • Background in training or mentoring junior underwriters

What This Is Not

  • A full-time or executive role

  • A policy review or compliance function

  • A role for someone who has been away from day-to-day underwriting for 5+ years

Engagement Schedule

  • Phase 1 - Discovery (1-3 Months)

  • Phase 2 – Ongoing Advisory (4-6 Months)

Why Join Us

  • Shape, don't maintain — your expertise will directly influence product decisions

  • True flexibility — remote, project-scoped, no corporate bureaucracy

  • Real visibility — contributions credited in product development, publications, and client conversations

  • Ecosystem access — connect with insurtech leaders, AI vendors, and innovative operators across the industry
